HISTORICAL SONG ASSIGNMENT 300 POINTS
Individually or in a group of 2 or 3, you will select two songs with historical importance interlaced through each song's lyrics.
1. The songs you choose will have a historical, social, economic and/or political slant within the lyrics and address the California U.S. History State Standard the songs address. http://score.rims.k12.ca.us/standards/grade11.html (for the state standards)
2. Research the standard and demonstrate what you investigated on that standard and how the song fits into that United States History Standard. Find out specific data and information regarding the standard.

3. Requirements for each song
A. Lyrics, for each song, must be typed out and legible to read or projected through the data projector. Each student will receive a copy of the lyrics if you choose to copy them yourself. Include the title of the song, year (if possible) and the name of the group and the standard that the song addresses.(50 points)
B. Your group will play the song in front of the class. (Standard size cassette, CD or digitized mp3 format is acceptable.)
C. A description of the song's importance or meaning. (e.g. What is the song writer(s) message? What are the main points s/he trying to get across?) (50 points) – This is written with the lyrics (look at the example)
D. A description of the topic the song is written about (historical background). This is a scaled-down version of number 2 above. (50 points) - This is written with the lyrics (look at the example)
E. Three discussion questions about different aspects (main points) of each song (TYPED OUT). The presenter(s) will lead the class discussion asking the three questions.
F. A copy of the lyrics and three questions will be given to the teacher. Your questions need to be thought provoking and in-depth. Simple questions will earn low points. (50 points)
G. Songs cannot have anything vulgar or contain profanity at all!!!!

Song selections will be on
1. Presentations will start on Monday, May 10, 2004
2. Extra credit can and will be earned by participating in the class discussions for each song.
3. Songs cannot be repeated.
Just
by completing/playing the songs doesn't automatically qualify you for
points. You must do a good job and
follow the instructions from above.
